Arthur’s Pass — New Zealand’s Most Dramatic Mountain Road

Arthur's Pass at 920 metres is the main road crossing of the Southern Alps on State Highway 73 — the primary route between Christchurch and the West Coast. It is one of New Zealand's most spectacular driving experiences and one of its most demanding roads. The combination of alpine gradient, sharp corners, avalanche risk zones, rapid weather changes, and high tourist traffic (including many campervans and rental vehicles from drivers unfamiliar with alpine conditions) makes it a genuinely challenging breakdown environment.

Why Arthur’s Pass Is So Dangerous for Breakdowns

  • Altitude and weather: Conditions can change from clear to snow, ice, or thick fog within minutes at the summit. A sunny Christchurch day can mean blizzard conditions at Arthur's Pass.
  • Avalanche zones: Several sections of SH73 through the Pass corridor pass through designated avalanche zones. NZTA closes these sections during high avalanche risk periods.
  • Remote location: The Pass is 154km from Christchurch. Response time from the city: 75–90 minutes minimum.
  • Limited mobile coverage: The alpine corridor has patchy mobile coverage. The Arthur's Pass village has better coverage than the open road sections.
  • High truck traffic: SH73 is a major freight route. Heavy trucks navigate the same hairpins that challenge tourist campervans.

If You Break Down on Arthur’s Pass

  1. Hazards on immediately — the moment you feel a problem
  2. Move to the left as far as possible — the Pass has limited shoulder but every metre of clearance helps
  3. Do NOT stand on the road downhill of your vehicle — on alpine gradients, runaway vehicle risk is real
  4. Call 03 244 0065 as soon as you have signal — tell us which side of the summit you are on and any visible landmarks
  5. In winter or poor weather — call 111 — NZTA needs to be aware of a stopped vehicle in potential avalanche or ice zones
  6. Stay in the vehicle unless it is unsafe — the Alpine weather can make roadside exposure genuinely dangerous

The Arthur’s Pass Village

If you can safely drive or coast to the Arthur's Pass village (the small community at the summit), do so. The village has a DOC visitor centre, a small café, and better mobile coverage than the open road sections. It is a far safer waiting location than the open SH73 corridor.

Vehicles Most at Risk on Arthur’s Pass

  • Rental campervans and motorhomes: Frequently driven by overseas visitors unfamiliar with alpine roads. Engine and brake stress from the gradient.
  • Vehicles with marginal cooling systems: The sustained SH73 climb causes overheating in vehicles with any cooling system weakness.
  • Vehicles without winter tyres in snow conditions: The Pass requires winter tyres or chains during snow events — standard summer tyres are inadequate.
