Car Breakdown in Christchurch — Canterbury’s Unique Situations
Christchurch is New Zealand's most straightforward city to break down in for most scenarios — the flat grid layout, wide roads, and excellent mobile coverage make calling and locating you simple. But Canterbury's geography also includes the Lyttelton Tunnel, Arthur's Pass, the Port Hills, and remote Banks Peninsula — environments that require specific knowledge. This guide covers all scenarios.
Step 1: Get to Safety
Christchurch-specific considerations:
- On the city grid: Pull to the left kerb. Christchurch's wide streets generally have good shoulder space. Turn hazards on and call from the vehicle.
- On the Southern Motorway (SH1 south from Christchurch): Emergency shoulder present — move left immediately. Call 111 for motorway incidents.
- In the Lyttelton Tunnel (SH74): Stay in the vehicle, hazards on, call 111 immediately. Do not attempt to exit into the tunnel. See our Lyttelton Tunnel guide.
- On Arthur's Pass SH73: See our dedicated Arthur's Pass guide — the most complex Canterbury breakdown scenario.
- On Banks Peninsula hill roads: Limited shoulder on winding roads. Move as far left as safely possible.
Step 2: Note Your Location
Christchurch's grid makes location easy — give us the nearest intersection (e.g. "Riccarton Road and Clarence Street") or a landmark. On rural and alpine roads, note any kilometre markers, DOC signage, or distinctive landmarks.
Step 3: Call Towing Christchurch

Christchurch-Specific Notes
Post-earthquake infrastructure: Some Christchurch streets and areas are still undergoing earthquake recovery work — occasional access constraints. Our operators know the current city road network.
Canterbury wind: Canterbury is famous for its nor'wester and southerly winds. Strong wind events create road debris. Tyre punctures from wind-blown debris are common across the Canterbury Plains.
